The Role of the Police Chief
Presented by the California Police Chiefs Association
In cooperation with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training

If you're a newly appointed chief, interested in becoming a police chief, or a second-in-command that wants to find out how best to support your chief, this course is essential.

This course is WHERE you need to be to find out:

  • WHY you would want the job — The rewards and challenges of leading today's police department
  • WHAT is expected of a police chief from the perspective of several critical and influential stakeholders
  • HOW to anticipate and assess issues and problems that can and will occur upon taking command of a municipal police agency
  • WHEN it's time for you to decide you do or don't want the job

Topics covered in this seminar will include:

  • Preparation for assuming the position of chief of police, or what to do and what not to do when you first take the job;
  • Expectations of the chief of police from the: city manager, elected officials, news media, and police chiefs' points of view;
  • Ethics for the police chief;
  • Surviving as a police chief, professionally and emotionally;
  • Contemporary legal issues for the police chief;
  • Emerging trends and future issues in policing;
  • Planning your career as a police executive.

The course will be presented in a lecture and panel format. There will be three panels covering the various expectations portions of the program. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with several experienced police chiefs, city managers, elected officials, executive search consultants, a police legal advisor, an attorney who represents police chiefs in trouble with their employers and a strategic management consultant.

Tuition and Registration Fees:
Please submit total payment for $555. POST Plan III: $455 + Registration Fee: $100 (covers incidental and administrative costs and is not POST reimbursable)
