The working relationship of the City Manager and the Police Chief is a critical element of successful local government. To be effective, each must have an understanding of various activities and critical elements. Through various exercises and lecture this course will provide both with a better understanding of each persons roles and how to collaborate together in the best interest of their city.

This 2-day course will cover the following:

Personal Communication, Roles & Expectations
The working relationship of the City Manager and Police Chief is a critical element of successful local government. To be effective, each must have an understanding of their personal communication styles, expectations, and the problems and complexities of both roles. Teams will learn about and better appreciate each others communications styles. They will identify and agree on methods and frequency of communication and clarify their respective roles in crisis situations.

Community Relations & Public Trust
The Police Chief and City Manager will identify ways they can work together to strengthen relationships between their police department and their community, as well as other City departments.

Current & Emerging Issues
To better prepare for the future, Police Chiefs and City Managers must be aware of emerging issues that may have an impact on their cities and responsibilities. They will identify and discuss current issues of concern and emerging issues that will likely impact their Cities and Police Departments in the near (and farther) future. 

Preserving the Relationship
Common pressures and factors can negatively impact the Police Chief and City Manager's relationship. Teams will develop an agreement of how to move forward inthe most productive way in order to help contribute to each other's success.

Course Information:

This course is intended as a "team building" session for the Chief and the City Manager. They must attend together and cannot register separately. The course is limited to the first 10 teams on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the 10 teams are received, others will be placed on a waiting list or referred to the next available course.  

Registration Fees PER TEAM*:  $960.00

*The Police Chief and City Manager must attend the course together. Individual registrations will not be accepted. 

This is a Plan III POST course and currently reimbursable by POST. POST Course Control #: 1137-11230-16-001. Only the Police Chief can receive reimbursement through POST. 

Coffee and an afternoon break service will be provided each day. All other meals are on own.
