Alternate Fuel or Hybrid Police Cars?
Received approximately 50 responses to this issue. Here are my results...
      • None have an alternate/hybrid vehicle in their PATROL fleet.
      • There have been a few experiments with propane and compressed natural gas, but too many problems associated with lack of power, cumbersome fueling, added costs, manufacturers not making parts anymore, etc.
      • More breakdowns associated with use (many patrol cars virtually run 24 hours a day depending on size of patrol force and fleet).
      • There is also problems associated with all the electronics needed for patrol cars (space and power), along with space for other equipment, long guns, helmets, ammunition, flack vests, etc.
      • There is also a problem with mutual aid and getting proper fuel when away from your home base.

CHP has been doing some testing on alternate fuel/hybrids with no successes.

About a third of the responses are transitioning administrative cars to hybrids like we are already doing.

I suspect there may be some patrol cars in the mid-west, back east, or in rural areas as they may be able to make the transition because their cars aren't run as hard and mainly on the open highway or in very small towns, but I didn't check out of state.
