"Care & Compensation for Police Motors"
To All Members: I would like to thank all 32 police agencies who responded to my questions regarding care & compensation for Police Motors. The following is a synopsis of the data collected:
    • 13 agencies pay the officer either in "straight" time or overtime to maintain their motor, including cleaning
    • 9 agencies said that keeping the Motor clean was an expectation of being a Motor Officer & no additional pay was given
    • 7 agencies allowed officers to maintain/clean their Motor on-duty, sometime during their regular work day
    • 3 agencies paid their officers "hazard pay" ranging from 2% to 5% per month, per their MOU, to maintain/clean their Motor
    • Of the agencies that do pay their officers, compensation varied as follows: 2hrs per month; 2.5hrs every other week; 3hrs every week; $30.38 per pay period; 6hrs per month; 8hrs per month; 10hrs per month & 4.5hrs per week
    Again, thanks for your help!

    "Take Home Vehicle Survey"
Thank you to those of you who responded to our take home vehicle survey as a result of our IRS audit where the auditor ruled that commuting miles for take home police vehicles is taxible, despite the fact that the IRS exempts both marked and unmarked take home vehicles. We were unfortunate to have an auditor who ignored their own regulations. The following are the results of the feedback from everyone who responded.

I received a total of 102 responses. Of those, 91 Chiefs have take home vehicles while 11 choose a vehicle allowance. Of all the agencies that have command staff, only 1 agency doesn't have take home vehicles for command staff. All of the Chief and Command staff vehicles were unmarked. Most agencies allow their detectives, motors, K-9's and other special teams to take vehicles home. 9 of the responding agencies have take home vehicles for all their officers.

Thank you again for all those that helped with this survey. I consider this overwhelming evidence that take home vehicles for Chiefs and Command staff is an industry norm. As we prepare our IRS letter appeal, this will be extremely helpful evidence.
