Professional Bio
John Cregan has more than twenty-six years of law enforcement experience and has served as the Santa Rosa Police Department Chief of Police since May of 2022.
Chief Cregan serves on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and is passionate about creating long term solutions to help police officers better serve those suffering from mental illness in our communities. He led the effort to reimagine the City of Santa Rosa’s mental health response model with the creation of the inRESPONSE Mental Health Support Team.
Chief Cregan serves on the Board of Directors of the California Police Chiefs Association and is working to develop innovative law enforcement strategies that are being used across the state of California to ensure that Santa Rosa remains a safe and vibrant community.
As Chief of Police, he has focused on violence reduction strategies through setting enforcement priorities, utilizing emerging technology, and focusing on the root causes of crime. A department-wide focus on organizational wellness and training has led to an improved services delivery by all 249 staff members.
Chief Cregan holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration and a master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership. Chief Cregan is a graduate of the California P.O.S.T. Command College and Leadership Santa Rosa.
