Lead Well
Investing in the Sustainability of Law Enforcement Leadership
Overview
The CPCA Lead Well Initiative was created to support the health, resilience, and long-term sustainability of California’s police chiefs. Police chiefs carry significant responsibility, including organizational leadership, public expectations, political dynamics, critical incidents, and the well-being of their personnel. Lead Well recognizes that while chiefs are responsible for supporting others, they also need intentional and meaningful support designed specifically for the realities of executive law enforcement leadership.
Through a phased approach, CPCA is building a long-term framework that provides practical resources, trusted peer connection, executive-level support, and wellness opportunities tailored to the chief’s role. The initiative is focused on the individual leader, not agency-wide wellness programs, and is designed to reduce isolation, strengthen resilience, support effective decision-making, and normalize leadership wellness as a professional standard.
Lead Well is more than a single program. It is CPCA’s commitment to ensuring that the people carrying the greatest responsibility are not doing it alone. By investing in the sustainability of police chiefs, CPCA is also investing in stronger agencies, healthier leadership, and the communities they serve.

Program Objectives
Lead Well is designed around several core objectives:
- Support leadership sustainability by providing tools and resources that help chiefs maintain effectiveness over time
- Reduce isolation at the executive level through trusted peer connections and structured support
- Enhance decision-making and performance by strengthening resilience and executive capacity
- Normalize leadership wellness as a professional standard, not a personal luxury
- Build a long-term support framework that becomes part of the association’s core member services

This initiative is not focused on organizational wellness at the agency level. It is intentionally centered on the individual leader, recognizing that the chief's role carries distinct pressures that require a different approach.

Executive Coaching Program
The Lead Well Executive Coaching Program provides California Police Chiefs with confidential, individualized executive coaching focused on leadership resilience, professional sustainability, and career transition support.
Developed in response to the increasing demands of executive policing leadership, the program offers chiefs a trusted space to strengthen leadership effectiveness, process organizational and operational stressors, reduce isolation, and prepare for future transitions. Participants are connected with experienced executive coaches who understand high-pressure leadership environments and the unique responsibilities of public safety executives.
The program is voluntary, confidential, and independent from agency oversight, performance evaluation, political advocacy, or operational consulting. Through a client-centered coaching approach, Lead Well supports the long-term health, readiness, and effectiveness of California’s police chiefs.
See below for how to get involved!
For California Police Chiefs Seeking a Coach
California Police Chiefs interested in participating in the program will have the opportunity to connect with a vetted executive coach for confidential, one-on-one support. Coaching is designed to help chiefs navigate the demands of executive leadership, including operational stress, leadership isolation, public accountability, career transition, and long-term professional sustainability.
Participation is voluntary and confidential. Coaching is not connected to agency oversight, performance evaluation, operational direction, or political advocacy. Additional information regarding eligibility, participation options, and the coach matching process will be shared through CPCA program communications.
For Executive Coaches Interested in Volunteering
CPCA is building a pool of experienced executive coaches to support the Lead Well Executive Coaching Program. Volunteer coaches should have experience working with senior leaders, public safety executives, or professionals operating in complex and high-pressure leadership environments.
Selected coaches will provide confidential, client-centered support focused on leadership resilience, executive effectiveness, transition readiness, and professional sustainability. Coaches are expected to maintain strong professional boundaries, uphold strict confidentiality, avoid conflicts of interest, and participate in program orientation and onboarding prior to working with participants.
Executive coaches interested in being considered for the program will be invited to complete an online application as part of CPCA’s coach identification and selection process.
