Employee Wellness: Contemporary Strategies in Building a Culture of Organizational Wellness

An epidemic of police suicides continues to impact the policing profession. In 2021 alone, we lost approximately 153 officers to suicide. The data does not consider that the experts predict that these numbers can be underreported by a factor of 2.5. The statistics are alarming, as we are losing almost double the number of officers to suicide than in all other line of duty deaths combined.

Attendees will benefit from learning about contemporary strategies and emerging trends in addressing organizational wellness and providing law enforcement leaders with proactive and practical approaches to creating a culture of wellness within their organizations and becoming trauma-informed leaders.

Line of Duty Injuries: How to Effectively Manage Workers’ Comp Injuries

The California Police Chiefs Association, in conjunction with the Jones Mayer & Hanna Brophy law firms, is hosting an executive organizational development session directed toward the critical issue of line of duty injuries. The health and wellness of the members of our law enforcement agencies is a core priority for Chiefs of Police and command staff. One of the central dimensions of this critical issue is the effectiveness of the treatment organizations provide following a line of duty injury. The purpose of this program is to assist chiefs, senior command staff, and human resources professionals with achieving improved recovery outcomes from the Workers’ Compensation system for their injured personnel. The material will offer an organizational approach for senior leaders to apply in driving the treatment process. The course will explain how treatment is delayed, denied, or approved, provide the legal basis for leaders to exert their authority and influence, reconcile true economic cost of injuries, offer protocols for helping assure accountability, and discuss overcoming barriers to change.

This will be the third time the California Police Chiefs Association has offered this session. The curriculum has been adapted following each presentation. This program will include new content addressing how treatment, recovery, and permanent disability interact with the PERS retirement system.

The format of the program is intended to facilitate a working dialogue focused on assisting leaders with what they are encountering in their agencies today.

Who Should Attend?

Chiefs, Seconds in Command and those responsible for the Overseeing/Managing of injury follow-up (a decision maker) such as an HR Director are recommended to attend as a team.

RIPA - Next Steps in Reporting & Reimbursement

Now that the RIPA Stop Data Collection Reports are out and all agencies throughout the State are now collecting data, agencies need to know how to interpret and understand the data. As officers spend time completing RIPA forms, that is time not spent on proactive and community-based policing strategies, fulfilling an unfunded state mandate. This summit will offer insights into how the RIPA Board interprets the data and provide analytical insights into what the data means or doesn’t mean and how your agency needs to prepare for the data release to tell your story. The summit will also provide a path for reimbursement under SB 90 for the expenses associated to RIPA to include lost time, software, supervision and reporting.

This summit is especially important for chiefs and command staff to attend along with any data analysts in your agency who might be assisting. Even more stop data will need to be collected in 2024 due to the changes made by the RIPA board this year so having your plan in place now is important.
